Compliance Officer
FigTree Financial · Trinidad · Full-Time
Position Overview
FigTree Financial is seeking a hands-on Compliance Officer to lead the day-to-day operation of its compliance programme across Barbados, Trinidad, and Cayman. Reporting to the Head of Governance, the role will translate regulatory obligations into effective controls, maintain high-quality compliance records and reporting, and ensure that critical filings, reviews, investigations, and remediation are completed accurately and on time. The successful candidate will serve as MLRO/MLCO where formally appointed, exercise independent judgement on AML/CFT matters, and have direct access to the CEO and Board where required.
Core Responsibilities
• Own the group-wide compliance calendar and coordinate filings, renewals, annual returns, compliance certificates, licence requirements, regulatory notifications, and fit-and-proper updates.
• Serve as MLRO/MLCO where appointed; receive and assess internal suspicious activity disclosures, determine reporting obligations, file STRs/SARs within statutory timelines, and maintain confidential records.
• Lead sanctions and PEP screening, transaction monitoring, alert investigation, AML/CFT risk assessments, and remediation of audit or inspection findings.
• Review onboarding and periodic-review files; conduct enhanced due diligence on higher-risk clients and complex structures, including source-of-funds and source-of-wealth assessments.
• Prepare FATCA/CRS reporting and coordinate responses to regulators, auditors, compliance consultants, and inspection teams.
• Execute the risk-based compliance monitoring and testing plan, maintain key registers and dashboards, identify control gaps, and track corrective actions to closure.
• Prepare concise monthly and quarterly reporting for the Head of Governance, Compliance Committee, management, and Board, clearly highlighting material risks, breaches, trends, overdue actions, and recommended decisions.
• Maintain compliance policies, procedures, records, staff attestations, personal-account-dealing controls, and training; provide practical guidance to client service, advisory, operations, and other teams.
• Monitor relevant developments from the FSC, CIMA, TTSEC, FATF, OECD, and other authorities, assess their implications, and implement approved changes across the firm.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means:
• Regulatory obligations, filings, renewals, reviews, and commitments are accurately completed within deadline, with emerging risks escalated early.
• AML/CFT decisions, screening, monitoring, investigations, and reports are timely, well reasoned, confidential, and fully documented.
• Client files, compliance registers, working papers, and audit evidence remain complete, current, and inspection-ready.
• Management and Board reporting provides a clear, decision-useful view of key risks, incidents, control gaps, and remediation.
• Colleagues regard Compliance as independent, practical, responsive, and committed to helping the business operate responsibly.
Skills & Competencies
• At least five years of progressive experience in compliance, AML/CFT, financial crime, or client due diligence within regulated financial services.
• Meaningful experience with regulatory filings, compliance monitoring, investigations, suspicious activity assessment, or MLRO support; prior MLRO, Deputy MLRO, MLCO, Deputy MLCO, or senior AML experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of AML/CFT, KYC/CDD, enhanced due diligence, sanctions, FATCA/CRS, and applicable Caribbean and international regulatory frameworks.
• Experience in wealth management, investment services, trust or corporate services, or another multi-jurisdictional environment is preferred.
• Excellent judgement, organisation, attention to detail, written communication, and ability to manage competing deadlines across jurisdictions.
• Relevant professional certification held or in progress, such as CAMS, ICA Certificate or Diploma, or equivalent.
• Ability to satisfy applicable fit-and-proper and regulatory approval requirements for any statutory appointment.
What We're Looking For
• Takes ownership, meets commitments, and follows matters through to closure.
• Raises concerns early, communicates clearly, and remains calm and objective under pressure.
• Exercises independent judgement and can document, escalate, and stand behind MLRO/MLCO decisions, including where they conflict with commercial preferences.
• Is practical, approachable, discreet, and committed to FigTree’s values of integrity, ownership, transparency, and long-term thinking.
