JOB SUMMARY
Provides legal advisory and regulatory compliance services to Sagicor Life Inc and affiliates in Sagicor’s Caribbean business segment (“Sagicor”)
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides legal services to support Sagicor’s day-to-day operations and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, including support for insurance, pensions and securities business; real estate transactions; and AML/CFT/CPF and tax information exchange compliance.
• Drafts, reviews, negotiates and settles contracts and deeds, prepares correspondence, opinions and, legal briefs and other documents and communicates with internal customers, attorneys and regulators on legal and regulatory matters.
• Provides support for regulatory examinations and internal and external audits.
• Undertakes and manages the representation of Sagicor in judicial, administrative or regulatory proceedings and works with and monitors the work of external counsel, as required.
• Reviews, analyses and advises on proposed, new and amended legislation pertaining to the legal and regulatory environment in which Sagicor operates and assists in identifying and managing legal and compliance risks.
• Provides legal support for departmental and strategic projects and for policy formulation, as directed.
• Assists with the preparation and delivery of stakeholder education and training.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED
Education/ Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in law, Legal Education Certificate and admitted to practice in Barbados with a minimum of 12 years’ experience and a commercial law concentration that includes financial services, mergers and acquisitions, data protection, real property and succession law.
• Regional practice exposure, experience in supervisory management, a Master of Laws, Master of Business Administration, data governance or anti-money laundering designation would be an asset.
• Strong research, organizational and time management skills, with a track record of managing competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
• Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills, who listens attentively, asks relevant questions, seeks common ground and writes and speaks clearly and concisely.
• Pro-active, resourceful problem-solver and strategic thinker who works well independently with minimal direction and exercises appropriate judgment and discretion.
• Diligent and flexible team player.
• Computer literate and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
