Spotlight: Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA)

Nvidia is no longer simply a graphics-chip company.

Its GPUs, networking systems and AI software now power the infrastructure behind generative AI, autonomous systems, scientific computing, robotics and enterprise automation. That infrastructure is changing where investment goes, which skills employers pay for and how early-career workers enter the labour market.

The shift is global. The Caribbean is already part of it.

Nvidia’s scale explains the employment impact

Nvidia’s recent financial results show the size of the AI infrastructure boom.

For fiscal 2026, Nvidia reported $215.9 billion in revenue. Its Data Center segment generated $193.7 billion, according to the company’s official fiscal 2026 results.

The momentum continued in the first quarter of fiscal 2027. Nvidia reported:

  • $81.6 billion in total revenue
  • $75.2 billion in Data Center revenue
  • 92% year-over-year growth in Data Center revenue

The company’s Q1 fiscal 2027 results describe an expanding market for “AI factories”: large computing facilities built to train and run AI systems.

Nvidia itself employed approximately 42,000 people at the end of fiscal 2026, including around 31,000 in research and development, according to its Form 10-K filing.

That is the first important distinction:

Nvidia’s direct workforce is relatively small compared with the economic activity its technology enables.

An Axis Intelligence calculation based on company filings estimated that Nvidia represented roughly 87.4% of combined merchant data-center AI chip revenue among Nvidia, AMD and Intel in Q1 2026. This is not the entire global AI-chip market. It excludes several custom-chip platforms and private companies. It is also limited to three public vendors.

Still, it shows Nvidia’s influence over the infrastructure layer of the AI economy.

When companies purchase Nvidia GPUs, networking equipment and software, they also create demand for data centers, power systems, cooling technology, construction, cybersecurity, cloud operations and AI-enabled services.

The employment impact travels far beyond Nvidia’s payroll.

AI is a physical infrastructure buildout

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s founder and CEO, describes AI as “the largest infrastructure expansion in human history.” His point is practical.

AI requires physical facilities. Those facilities require land, electricity, cooling systems, fibre connectivity, security and maintenance.

Huang has repeatedly highlighted demand for:

  • Electricians
  • Plumbers and pipefitters
  • Steelworkers
  • Construction workers
  • Network technicians
  • Mechanical and HVAC specialists
  • Equipment installers
  • Data-center operators

The industry’s growth is therefore creating two connected employment channels.

The first is the technology workforce: machine-learning engineers, cloud architects, data scientists, chip designers, cybersecurity specialists and AI product managers.

The second is the infrastructure workforce: engineers, technicians, contractors, facilities managers and skilled tradespeople who build and operate the physical systems.

Some 2026 projections place the wider US job impact associated with Nvidia-led AI infrastructure at more than 100,000 jobs. That figure should be treated as an ecosystem estimate, not as Nvidia-reported employment. The more reliable conclusion is the direction of travel: AI investment is creating demand for both advanced digital skills and essential technical trades.

AI is not only happening on screens. It is being built inside factories, power plants, server rooms and construction sites.

The global labour market is splitting into two tracks

PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer analysed more than one billion job advertisements across 27 countries and territories.

Its findings show a labour market moving in two directions.

Track one: AI amplifies expertise

Some roles become more valuable because AI removes routine work and allows experienced professionals to focus on complex decisions.

Examples include:

  • Radiologists using AI-assisted diagnostics
  • Recruiters using automated screening tools
  • Financial analysts interpreting larger data sets
  • Engineers using simulation and digital twins
  • Healthcare administrators coordinating AI-supported services

PwC found that workers with AI skills receive an average 62% wage premium, up from 57% in the previous analysis.

Job postings requiring specific AI skills grew 69%, compared with 9% growth across the overall job market.

That gap is significant. Employers are not only looking for people who can build AI systems. They are looking for people who can use them inside existing professions.

PwC also found that new tasks in AI-exposed roles are 2.5 times more likely to depend on human capabilities such as judgment, creativity, leadership and interpersonal communication.

These skills are becoming more valuable because AI can produce an answer without reliably understanding the consequences of that answer.

Track two: AI makes routine work easier to automate

Other roles become easier for less-experienced workers: or software: to perform.

This creates pressure on jobs built around:

  • Repetitive customer support
  • Standard documentation
  • Basic content production
  • Simple data entry
  • Routine coding
  • Scripted sales conversations
  • First-level administrative processing

PwC describes these as “democratised” roles. AI lowers the technical barrier to completing the work. That can expand access in some cases. It can also reduce the number of entry-level positions available as a first step into a profession.

This is the central employment question:

If AI automates the routine tasks that once trained junior employees, where will the next generation gain experience?

BPO faces immediate pressure

The Caribbean has a strong connection to global service work. The BPO Caribbean sector supports thousands of jobs in customer service, technical support, sales and back-office operations.

That makes the region part of the AI transition from the beginning.

Goldman Sachs research, reported by CNBC, found that employment in call centers has fallen sharply below historical trends across several developed markets:

  • 39% below trend in the United States
  • 33% below trend in Canada
  • 27% below trend in Germany

The research also identified pressure in software publishing, management consulting and advertising services.

Entry-level workers appear most exposed. Goldman analysed more than 800 occupations and found the strongest AI-related headwinds among workers starting their careers.

This does not mean Caribbean BPO jobs disappear overnight. It means the job description changes.

A customer-service representative who only follows a script faces more pressure than one who can:

  • Manage AI-assisted customer journeys
  • Handle escalations
  • Investigate unusual cases
  • Protect customer data
  • Communicate across cultures
  • Review AI-generated recommendations
  • Improve workflows

The same pattern applies to KPO Caribbean roles. Research, finance, healthcare administration and legal support can grow when workers use AI effectively: but routine processing alone becomes less defensible.

The Caribbean is competing for AI infrastructure

The region is not waiting for the AI economy to arrive.

In the Dominican Republic, the government and Nvidia agreed to develop AI capabilities and establish a Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence. The Dominican Presidency describes the initiative as a platform for students, researchers and entrepreneurs.

The broader programme includes professional training, applied research and plans for national AI infrastructure. It also targets applications in finance, healthcare, tourism, education, mobility and public services.

Trinidad and Tobago is considering an even more infrastructure-heavy path. The government signed non-binding memoranda of understanding involving:

  • A proposed 300 MW data center linked to EY
  • A proposed 150 MW AI data-center project linked to Hummingbird AI Holdings
  • Potential expansion of the Hummingbird project to 500 MW

Government messaging connects the wider package: including a proposed steel plant project: to more than US$5 billion in investment and over 5,000 jobs.

That figure requires careful interpretation. The MoUs are not construction contracts. The 5,000-job estimate covers multiple projects and is expected to include a substantial number of temporary construction roles. Permanent data-center employment is likely to be much smaller and more specialised.

The Associated Press report syndicated by The Washington Times and regional analysis have also raised questions about power, water, cooling and environmental capacity.

The answer depends on more than available land.

The region needs reliable electricity, resilient connectivity, water-efficient cooling, trained technicians, strong regulation and long-term investment. Without those foundations, large project announcements may create headlines without creating durable local careers.

What Caribbean professionals should do now

The practical message is not “learn everything about AI.”

It is more focused.

1. Make digital literacy your baseline

Use spreadsheets, cloud platforms, collaboration tools, automation software and data dashboards confidently.

Basic digital fluency is no longer a differentiator. It is the entry requirement.

2. Add AI fluency to your existing profession

A finance professional should understand AI-assisted forecasting and fraud detection.

A healthcare administrator should understand data privacy, workflow automation and clinical-support tools.

A tourism professional should understand revenue systems, customer analytics and AI-supported service operations.

A BPO worker should understand quality assurance, conversational AI, escalation management and customer-data protection.

3. Build human skills deliberately

Judgment. Creativity. Leadership. Clear communication.

These are not vague soft skills. They are the capabilities that help people verify AI outputs, manage risk, make decisions and build trust.

4. Watch the infrastructure economy

New opportunities may emerge in:

  • Electrical and mechanical maintenance
  • HVAC and industrial cooling
  • Construction project management
  • Renewable energy and grid systems
  • Cybersecurity
  • Data-center operations
  • Network engineering
  • Cloud and DevOps
  • AI governance and compliance

These roles may be local, hybrid or connected to global employers.

5. Choose employers carefully

The growth of AI also creates space for misleading training programmes, fake remote roles and speculative job advertisements.

The bottom line

Nvidia’s technology is changing employment in two directions at once.

It is creating a major infrastructure economy that needs construction workers, electricians, technicians, engineers and operators.

It is also changing knowledge work by rewarding professionals who combine AI fluency with judgment, creativity and responsibility.

For the Caribbean, this is both an opportunity and a test.

The region can supply remote talent to the global economy. It can also build local capacity in AI, energy, infrastructure, finance, healthcare, tourism and advanced technical services.

But the advantage will go to professionals who prepare before the job title changes.
